Scope and focus

Urban Ecology is described by Forman (2014) as the whole of interactions of organisms, built structures, and the physical environment, where people are concentrated. Until recently, urban ecology has been predominantly approached from a biological perspective. Alberti (2009) calls for other professions and research angles to enrich the urban ecology domain.

And so, at TUDelft our goal is to enrich the urban ecology domain but more specific to actively deal with (urban) ecological challenges, biodiversity loss and related issues from a planning and design perspective. In our view planning, design and engineering explorations can contribute substantially to the development of a model that considers cities as urban ecosystems developing towards eco-cities
